Issue #2/2020  I   Learn more about the IPNA Educational Programs

Dear IPNA Members and Friends,

We are delighted to present the second issue of the IPNA Education Newsletter. As you can see, our efforts to meet our IPNA education mission – to educate patients/parents, trainees in pediatric nephrology, primary care physicians and advanced practitioners who care for children with kidney disorders and our pediatric nephrology community - continue unabated, influenced by necessary adjustments and adaptations for our new worldwide realities.

This issue contains an update on our IPNA Fellowship program, very much affected by COVID-19 restrictions and altered economics.  The need for IPNA Sister Programs to help develop pediatric nephrology capacity in underserved portions of the world has never been more apparent, and this issue presents more evidence on how this program continues to develop and meet real needs.  We also include a stimulating interview with a true pediatric nephrology leader, Arvind Bagga.

The IPNA Professional Education Committee continues to work assiduously on multiple fronts: 1) meeting with the IPNA Calgary 2022 Congress Organizing Committee to begin to plan for exciting educational approaches adaptable to any reality in 2022; 2) developing new guidelines to invite and promote virtual IPNA Teaching Courses in less developed parts of the world in 2021 and beyond; 3) continuing the exciting growth and advancement of the IPNA Clinical Practice Guidelines and joint ISN-IPNA webinars that were initiated this year; and 4) addressing opportunities for refining our IPNA Junior Master Classes (JMC) Program, building on our successful first virtual program this Fall and interest in coordinating the JMC with new fellow education programs for a truly worldwide Master Class Program.

One thing we can anticipate is the need, and willingness, to pursue virtual education in all of our education domains, and to better understand the advantages and limitations with these approaches.  The cost-effectiveness of many of these methods is impressive.  We will continue to rely on our inquisitive and flexible natures, and the experiences of many of our members in developing our efforts in these exciting new educational spheres.

Thank you for being a part of our efforts,

Kind regards,

John Mahan, Professional Education Committee Chair
Yam-Ngo Lim, Newsletter Subcommittee Chair

IPNA Fellowship IMPORTANT UPDATE

COVID has affected all of our activities and the IPNA Fellowships Program is no exception. Many applicants have not been able to start their training due to border closures, medical needs in their own countries, and restrictions at the Training Centers. Currently more than 50% of approved fellowships from previous rounds are awaiting instructions for year 2021.

As a result of this situation, the applications have been placed on hold for the coming year. The Fellowship Committee will be monitoring the global situation closely in hopes of opening up the application process once COVID is much better controlled and fellowship training is deemed to be safe.
Thank you for your understanding.

New Fellowship Training Center

IPNA Fellowships are now possible in 41 recognized training centers. Hospital Sant Joan de Deu in Barcelona succesfully joined the list in October 2020 and has become the 41st IPNA recognized training center.

Sister Center Program: Apply to be listed as IPNA Supporting Center

The IPNA Sister program aims to link pediatric renal units in less well resourced re-gions (emerging centers) with experienced pediatric  units in well resourced regions (supporting centers) to assist in clinical training, advice on upgrading clinical ser-vices and clinical research development. From time to time we have requests from  emerging centers to help identify a suitable supporting center.

If your center is interested being listed as a supporting center we ask that you reply via email and list the name of your institution, city, country, geographical region, working language and a contact person and their email. This list will be available on our website under sister centers here.

IPNA Teaching Courses: Virtual & Physical Options

IPNA Teaching Courses are a core educational activity of the society with the highest reach when it comes to the number of participants. In 2019, up to 4,000 attendees participated in IPNA Teaching Courses conducted all over the world.

Given the realities of COVID-19 and alterations in travel, as well as further development of web-based education, support for virtual Teaching Courses is now available (to a maximum of $2000/course for web platform, recordings and posting for future online access).
While IPNA may be able to provide web-based support for some courses, Teaching Courses are encouraged to pursue local presentation and recording support wherever possible.

ESPN - IPNA Master for Junior Classes

This IPNA-ESPN Educational Program was launched in 2014, especially dedicated to Pediatrics residents, Pediatricians with special interest in Pediatric Nephrology, fellows in Pediatric Nephrology and young Pediatric Nephrologists. The whole program covers the complete Pediatric Nephrology curriculum and includes three meetings in three consecutive years, allowing the achievement of the IPNA-ESPN Master in Pediatric Nephrology. A CME certificate is distributed after each meeting.

IPNA-ESPN Master for Junior Classes 2020 was held online on September 19-20. With this course, we initiated our Junior Classes Third Cycle. This year's program received 8 CME credits and reviewed latest updates on antenatal hydronephrosis, CAKUT, UTI and VUR, voiding dysfunction, fluid and electrolytes management, renal tubular acidosis, Alport syndrome and thin membrane disease, podocytopathies and ciliopathies, ADPKD and ARPKD, renal involvement in metabolic diseases and mitochondrial cytopathies. Concerning the present context, we also had a special lecture “COVID-19: special focus on the kidney”. All lectures were delivered by IPNA and ESPN speakers. The course was attended by 143 students from 40 different nationalities, 30 students completed the three years cycle.

For next year, we plan our Second IPNA-ESPN Master for Junior Classes (Third Cycle) in Amsterdam, before ESPN Annual Meeting, September 2021. Announcements will be presented in IPNA and ESPN newsletters.

We thank the students and teachers for their outstanding contribution for the success  of this program.
