Dear IPNA Members and Friends,

We are delighted to present with the first issue of the IPNA Education Newsletter. The portfolio of IPNA educational programs is growing, and we are excited to share this progress in this first IPNA Educational Newsletter. As always, your feedback and participation are greatly appreciated and please let us know if you have any ideas on additional content or ways to improve this newsletter.

Many teaching courses and training fellowships are being postponed due to the coronavirus, so it is a challenging time to keep the educational programs running. In January, IPNA began producing IPNA Webinars which have been extremely well attended and highly rated.  We are excited about how we are increasing the IPNA educational impact through these virtual education efforts.

In the coming weeks we will present the first joint ISN-IPNA webinar. ‘Going virtual’ is a path to keep the educational mission of IPNA alive and growing – and we will continue to expand and improve these efforts to help support face to face educational sessions.  For example, the IPNA-ESPN Masterclass for Juniors will take place in September as a virtual meeting.

IPNA Membership is growing and so is the scope of our work. We are excited by the new approach to involve the membership of IPNA in volunteer positions within committees, which will have an enormous effect on our productivity and new outcomes.
Thank you for being a part of our efforts,

Kind regards,

John Mahan, PEC Chair
Maury Pinsk, Communication Committee Chair
Yam-Ngo Lim, Newsletter Subcommittee Chair

Fellowship Program

Dear colleagues,

Currently we have more than 40 Training Centers from Asia, Africa, Europe, Central America, North America and South America. IPNA has recognised these centers after reviewing the high quality of their academic programs and clinical facilities. The Training Centers provide training for fellows in basic and advanced pediatric nephrology knowledge and skills that is applied when returning to their home countries. More than 200 fellows have completed their training since 2003; twenty-five fellows are currently distributed among these Centers. This year, 14 young pediatricians have been accepted into theses training programs.

New applications are reviewed in April and October each year. We encourage all those who aspire to improve the care for children with kidney diseases in their countries to apply for this Program. Program details can be downloaded  from the fellowship handbook HERE.

Kind regards,

Interview with Dr. Abdul Qader, IPNA Fellow

Inauguration of “SQUARE Children Kidney & Dialysis Centre

Why did you pursue Pediatric Nephrology?

I had already decided to do Paediatrics during my medical school days because it gives me great pleasure to care for a population of infants and children, most of whom cannot express their feelings. However, during my internship, I found nephrology the most interesting and difficult part of doing Paediatrics.

What was the biggest challenge for you during your fellowship training?

It was a wonderful time spent at the National University Hospital in Singapore. But I had difficulty dealing with young adults. I guess it’s the same everywhere.

What has been the best moment in your career so far?

I have been working on setting up a Paediatric Renal Center, and on 15th March 2020, we have inaugurated my renal unit named Square Children Kidney & Dialysis Centre. That was the best moment for my career.

What are your future plans back in Bangladesh? Would you like to set up your own training center one day?

We have lots of difficulty regarding renal transplantation. Recently the government approved organ donation beyond blood relatives, so we are one step closer to deceased donor kidney transplantation. That will be my priority after establishing all forms of renal replacement therapy in my center.
I believe that training young people about kidney disease will improve the care for the little kidney. So, I want to set up my own training program in the future.

The care for little kidneys might be covered in bigger towns, but there is still a problem with access to healthcare in rural areas in countries like Bangladesh. What would be the way to improve this in your opinion? What would be the best way to build awareness about kidney diseases in children?

The Paediatric Nephrology Society of Bangladesh is organizing dialysis workshops in different hospitals targeting young pediatricians, to train them about acute renal replacement therapy.  We should organize more workshops, seminars and kidney disease awareness programs to reach the rural communities. We should aim to reach the pediatrician working in the rural districts in our future programs.

Do you enjoy the frontline work with families? How difficult is that in Bangladesh?

Yes, it’s a tough job. I feel very blessed when they smile back at me but become very sad when their decision results in more suffering for the child.

Extracts from the Fellowship Final Reports

I strongly believe that the training I have received in this IPNA training programme, on basic clinical practice in pediatric nephrology, chronic pediatric peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis, pediatric renal transplantation and critical care nephrology, will lead me to a growing path in my professional development. I trust that with this training I will surely be able contribute to my organisation and help the children of Myanmar.

Dr. Myo Swe Myint, Fellowship Training at NUH Singapore

During work, my professional knowledge has been consolidated and increased, and I have learned many advanced technologies and methods. For me, the most important benefit is learning of new concepts and techniques. Therefore, I am determined to bring the knowledge and ideas I have learned back to my job and influence and motivate my colleagues.

Sister Center Program 2020

Despite travel restrictions due to COVID-19, the IPNA sister programme was delighted to receive three very strong applicants for the 2020 program. It was a difficult decision, but the funding was awarded  to  Dr Ijaz and the team at KEMU, Lahore, Pakistan and Dr Bagga’s team at All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Dr Ijaz’s heartwarming response to the news was: "I owe you the biggest gratitude for accepting our application for IPNA Sister Renal Program. This will surely help us to develop and enhance teaching, training and research activities at our centre. Our part of the world has huge numbers of patients but limited opportunities. Joining hands will be a great initiative both for improving working and research opportunities. I shall try my level best to come up to your expectations."

The IPNA Sister Program urges both existing and new partnerships to consider newer telecommunications apps/programmes to continue to work together in enhancing pediatric nephrology programs throughout the world.

The mission of the PEC is to provide high quality IPNA-sponsored pediatric nephrology education for pediatric nephrologists, pediatric nephrology trainees and physicians who care for children with kidney disorders.

The PEC aims to accomplish this through work to meet the following goals:
1. Organize and sponsor Teaching Courses that provide high value education about pediatric nephrology topics for physicians, trainees and allied health professionals in less developed areas of the world
2. Develop and implement advanced Pediatric Nephrology Master Classes for pediatric nephrology trainees and pediatric nephrologists
3. Develop IPNA Webinars devoted to Clinical Practice/Guidelines and a series of ISN-IPNA collaborative Webinars
4. Contribute to educational plan and innovative programs at 2022 IPNA Congress in Calgary

The PEC is organized to accomplish these goals through 4 Sub-Committees, each devoted to a specific educational activity:

As we organize our efforts, and add the important input and energy of IPNA committee volunteers to the IPNA councilors who have engaged in the PEC (John D Mahan & Elena Levtchenko [co-chairs], Kenji Ishikura, Ruth McDonald, Julian Midgley, Jaime Restrepo, Rezan Topaloglu), we look to building on the previous work of the IPNA Teaching Courses and Master Class Committees as the newly constituted PED that is committed to expanding the educational impact of IPNA for generations.

World Kidney Day 2020

Around the world, 1220 World Kidney Day activities were pinned to the WKD official event map! "Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere – from Prevention to Detection and Equitable Access to Care" was the topic of the 2020 campaign.

IPNA joins the campaign every year with its own project contest and financial support. All receiv
ed applications, in total 18, were high-quality projects and we struggled to choose only one winner. Therefore, for the first time in our history, we have decided to award two winners: Projects in Dhaka/Bangladesh and Bhopal/India. You can read the report about these two projects in the link below.
