WHAT WE DO

Haemodialysis is among the most resource-intensive therapies in modern medicine. It leads to high usage of water, energy, and single-use materials. As the global burden of kidney disease continues to grow, reducing the environmental footprint of nephrology care is no longer optional. It is a clinical and ethical imperative.

The Green Nephrology Taskforce will work across four pillars:

1. Standardisation and benchmarking We are developing frameworks that enable facilities worldwide to track, report, and reduce their environmental impact: creating a common language for sustainability in nephrology.

2. Clinical guidance We will translate sustainability science into practical clinical guidance, targeting high-impact areas including water stewardship, waste minimisation, resource circularity, and energy efficiency.

3. Education and capacity building We will share toolkits and educational materials, available across languages and resource settings. Our goal is adaptable, equitable sustainability relevant to high- and low-resource environments alike.

4. Advocacy and policy We will engage with healthcare systems, industry, and policymakers to build a culture of sustainability in paediatric nephrology and drive innovation at institutional and national levels.

Sustainable Kidney Care Online Learning Module

Developed with the UK Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, this free, accredited module introduces the principles of sustainable kidney care and practical steps for clinical teams. The original module can be accessed here – Access the module here

Sustainable Kidney Care Toolkit

The Sustainable Kidney Care Toolkit supports kidney centres across the UK in implementing sustainable care whilst aligning with the NHS Renal Specialised Transformation Programme (RSTP). Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health issue, affecting over 10% of the population (Jager et al., 2019), with the burden on the NHS continuing to rise (NHS England, 2022).

This toolkit provides practical guidance for commissioners, service providers, and clinicians to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care, while reducing costs and environmental impact.

TOOLKIT
In-centre haemodialysis carbon calculator

It is a free online carbon footprint calculator for use in in-centre haemodialysis units. It measures your overall footprint and carbon intensity per patient session, and identifies the greenhouse gas emission hotspots from running your haemodialysis unit.
